An english biography of Sarkozy

28 January 1955
Nicolas Sarkozy is born in the 17th arrondissement of Paris.
He is the second son of Paul Sarkozy of Nagy-Bocsa, a Hungarian aristocrat exiled to France, who became a publicist, and of Andrée Mallah, a law student.

1959
Paul Sarkozy leaves the family home and Andrée resumes studying law, which she had given up. She becomes a barrister at Nanterre in order to provide for her children.

1967
Nicolas Sarkozy retakes his first year of the public secondary school Chaptal de Neuilly.

1968
Sarkozy attends the private secondary school Saint-Louis de Monceau, where he gains his bac B in 1973.

1973
The Sarkozy family settles at Neuilly sur Seine.

1974
He joins the ‘Union of Democrats for the Republic’ and militates in favour of Jacques Chaban-Delmas.

1976
He joins the RPR under the sponsorship of Charles Pasqua.

1978
He gains a Masters in private law at Paris X and leaves to carry out his military service.

1979
He is accepted to study political science at Paris and envisages a career as a journalist.

1980
He is President of the Youth Committee supporting the election of Jacques Chirac.

1981
Sarkozy gains his CAPA (certificat d’aptitude à la profession d’avocat) and a PhD in political science. He is employed by the solicitor Guy Danet.

23 September 1982
He marries Marie-Dominique Culioli, the daughter of a Corsican pharmacist. His best man is no other than Charles Pasqua.

1983
Nicolas Sarkozy succeeds Achille Peretti in the office of Mayor of Neuilly.

1985
Birth of his son Pierre.


1987
Birth of his son Jean.

1989
Divorced, Nicolas Sarkozy starts anew with Cécilia Ciganer-Albeniz, Parliamentary Secretary of René Touzet and Senator of L’Indre.

1993
He is elected deputy of Neuilly, and then he is appointed Minister of the Budget in Edouard Balladur’s government. During the capture of hostages from the nursery school at Neuilly, he negotiates directly with the madman and succeeds in getting out of the school, with a child in his arms.

1995
During the presidential campaign, he officially takes the side of Edouard Balladur and suffers with him in his failure.

1996
He marries Cécilia, having Marin Bouygues and Bernard Arnault as best men.

1997
Birth of his son Louis.

1999
Sarkozy is elected President of the RPR, but he leaves this post after the failure of the European elections. He takes advantage of this withdrawal from the national political scene by publishing the book ‘Libre’.

2002
He supports Jacques Chirac during the presidential elections, before being appointed Home Secretary of the Raffarin government. He extols ‘zero tolerance’ and makes safety his priority. His firmness and his repressive policies, combined with those of Gilles de Robien, achieve a decline in the number of car accidents.

2003
He plays an important role in drafting the law on interior security.

2004
Sarkozy is appointed Minister of Economics, Finance and Industry in Raffarin’s third Government. He leaves this post due to the wishes of the Head of State, after having been elected President of the UMP with 85.1% of the votes. He is also elected County Councillor of the Neuilly-sur-Seine Nord canton and President of the Hauts-de-Seine County Council.

2005
After the failure of the referendum on Europe and the resignation of the Raffarin Government, he returns to the government as Minister of both the Interior and Territorial Management. During the October riots, he applies his ‘zero tolerance’ policy to regain order, which turns opposition parties and numerous journalists against him, while 68% of French people approve of his actions.

June 2006
The National Assembly passes his draft law concerning immigration and integration. It involves replacing the old immigration policy, by one of chosen immigration, which favours welcoming immigrants with University qualifications.

12 July 2006
Aged 51 Nicolas Sakozy unveils his waxwork at the Grévin museum.

14 January 2007
The UMP, after being assembled in ‘congrès exceptionnel’, votes by 98.1%, for Nicolas Sarkozy to be the party’s presidential candidate at the next elections.
His campaign slogan is “Together anything becomes possible”.

6 May 2007
At 8pm, Nicolas Sarkozy is officially announced as the winner of the presidential elections with nearly 53% of the votes.
He becomes the sixth President of the fifth Republic.
