Barack Obama is born in Honolulu, Hawaii. Barack, an African name meaning 'blessed,' is the son of Barack Obama Sr., a black Kenyan, and Ann Dunham, a white American. His parents met while his father was a foreign student in Hawaii. They are deceased.

Moves to Djakarta, Indonesia when Obama's mother married Lola Soetoro, an oil executive. He returned to the United States four years later to live with his grandparents and attend Punahou School in Hawaii. He graduated from the prestigious prep school in 1979.

Graduates from Columbia University in New York City with a bachelor's degree in Political Science.

Obama marries Michelle Robinson, his summer adviser at Sidley Austin. Robinson attended Princeton before going to Harvard Law School where she received her degree in 1988. She is from a black working-class South Side family. She is the Executive Director of Community Affairs at the University of Chicago Hospital.

 

1992

Works at the civil rights law firm Davis, Miner, Barnhill and Galland in Chicago where he represented victims of housing and employment discrimination. Obama also worked on voting rights legislation for a small public-interest firm.

 

1993

Obama was named by Crain's Chicago Business as one of "40 under 40" outstanding young leaders.

 

1993 - 2004

Named Senior Lecturer at the prestigious University of Chicago Law School.

Joins the Illinois Legislature as a State Senator representing the 13th district, which includes some of the poorest neighborhoods in the city's South Side.

While in the Illinois State Senate, Obama is named Chairman of the Health and Human Services Committee. His distinguished works include passing bill to assist children and adults who cannot afford health insurance; increasing funding for AIDS prevention and care; a law requiring police to videotape interrogations for crimes punishable by the death penalty; a law requiring insurance companies to cover routine mammograms; legislation to curb racial profiling.

Wins the Senate primary for the Democratic party of Illinois. In the primary, he received 53% of the vote in a seven-person race.

Obama gains worldwide recognition for his speech at the Democratic National Convention in Boston. The speech catapults his image and he is noted as one of the most notable orators for the Democratic party.

2 novembre 2004

With 70% of the vote, Obama is elected to the Senate. He is only the third African-American elected to the Senate and is currently the highest ranking African-American elected official in the United States.

Obama, a democrat, is sworn into national office as a United States Senator for Illinois.

 

18 avril 2005

Time magazine names Obama one of "The World's Most Influential People." He is listed among other leaders and revolutionaries. This same year, the British journal New Statesman names Obama one of "10 People Who Could Change the World."

 

17 octobre 2006

Publishes "The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream," which details his views of politics and his vision for the future of the U.S. government and its people.

 

15 mai 2008

Hillary Clinton continues agitating for the "honor" and she gets a large victory in West Virginia, but still Barack Obama is taking the lead with 1891.5 delegates.

 

25 août 2008 - 28 août 2008

The party's candidate will be formally appointed in Denver, Colorado, by the Democratic Convention. It is predicted that Obama will be the candidate chosen by the party but, will he be able to be elected as president of the US although he has not got so much support of the working-class as Hilary?
