|---|
On the 23rd January I was born in the town of Manchester, England. It is a time of continuation and great changes. At home, the Conservative government of Margaret Thatcher is re-elected for the third time, and U2 release their groundbreaking album The Joshua Tree.
Overseas the Lebanon conflict and Cold War continue. By the end of the year lasting changes are set down, with the first Palestinian Intifada taking place and the initiation of the construction of the channel tunnel.
| 1 January 1989 - 31 December 1989 | Berlin Wall Comes Down |
|---|
The year of 1989 was the beginning of my childhood and consciousness of the world around me, which would be marked by my earliest memories. Most memorable was a family holiday with relatives in California and a trip to Disneyland.
On a global scale, 1989 was the end of an era. Revolutions from within taking place across eastern Europe led to the disintegration of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War. The most famous event would be the fall of the Berlin wall.
| 1 January 1990 - 31 December 1990 | Nelson Mandela Freed |
|---|
1990 was the beginning of things to come. At home, this was the year that I started pre-school and would spend time with other children for the first time. This period provided me with an initiation to the world outside of home as well as lasting memories.
In my country it was a time of civil unrest and some of the most notorious riots, especially the London Poll Tax Riots which eventually led to the downfall of the by now very unpopular Margaret Thatcher by the end of the year.
Elsewhere in the world, West Germany wins the FIFA world cup over Argentina. In the Middle East, Iraq invades Kuwait, one of a chain of events which lead to the Gulf War the following year.
| 1 January 1991 - 31 December 1991 | Dissolution of the USSR |
|---|
This is the year that I begin primary school and education as well as make some of the friends that I still know today.
The beginning of this year is marked by the outbreak of the Gulf War, the notorious Desert Storm invasion by western powers on Iraq.
During this year the Soviet Union is collapsing as most member states declare themselves independent.
By the very end of the year the Soviet Union has been disbanded from within and ceases to exist.
| 1 January 1998 - 31 December 1998 | Northern Ireland Peace process |
|---|
1998 is a very memorable year for me, mostly because of the 3-0 defeat by France over Brazil in the World Cup Final.
It is also the year that I start secondary school where I make many new friends, and develop an interest in basketball - a sport which I still love to play today.
| 1 January 2001 - 31 December 2001 |
|---|
This is the year that my basketball team wins the Manchester under-16 league competition, a great achievement. Life is becoming more interesting and new opportunities are opening.
The end of the year is marked by the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. The fallout would prove to be the beginning of a new era of ideological conflict and war.
| 1 January 2003 - 31 December 2003 |
|---|
This year I start college, and make the wrong decision of giving up basketball to focus on my studies. This leads to laziness which ironically affects my studies in a negative way.
This year is also known for the invasion of Iraq, which was discovered soon after to have been based on government misinformation and heavily influenced if not orchesrated by ideological and corporate influences. Hopes for a new era of pace become increasingly unlikely.
| 1 January 2005 - 31 December 2005 |
|---|
This year I finish College and go straight on to Kingston University in London. It is my first time living away from home. It proves to be a new experience which leads to further ambitions and interests, especially travel.
This same year the tensions between Muslim communities and British foreign policy come to boiling point with the terrorist attack on the London Underground.
| 1 January 2008 - 31 December 2008 |
|---|
This is a very important year for me as it is the year that I graduate from University with a degree in Human Geography and French. I am relieved but also satisfied, because I feel that I put the work in. My time at University has helped me decide how I would like to continue, and I decide to go into journalism.
I spend the summer of this year completing my degree and travelling in France and it proves to be a very enjoyable and rewarding experience which helps me later on in dealing with new experiences.

"There is surely nothing other than the single purpose of the moment. A man's whole life is a succession of moment after moment. If one fully understands the present moment, there is nothing left to do, and nothing else to pursue." Bushido
"It is a good viewpoint to see the world as a dream. When you have something like a nightmare, you will wake up and tell yourself that it was only a dream. It is said that the world we live in is not a bit different from this." Bushido
Which event has had the most impact on your era (generation) ?
The event which had the most impact on my generation would probably be the WTC attacks. This is because it happened at a time when people my age were starting to form their own views of the world.
What is your worst flaw ?
Forgetfulness, repeating the same mistakes again.
Are you superstitious ?
I'm sceptical about superstition. I do not have any in particular but i believe that there will always be mysteries in life and death.
Which of your achievements are you the most proud of ?
Up to now, my university degree. I worked hard and deserved it.
Who is your favorite writer, what is your favorite book ?
Dino Buzatti - The Tartare Steppe
